WYCD honors the Fallen Soldiers
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30th 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May, passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays.
On Monday, traditional Memorial Day Observance, many will honor America’s veterans and salute fallen service members during ceremonies throughout the Detroit Metro Area. Click here for a listing.
At noon on Monday, May 26th, 99.5 WYCD aired the WYCD Fallen Soldier Tribute. You can download the podcast right here at WYCD.COM. Just click the button below. Memorial Day is a time to remember the fallen with parades, tributes and stories. Please feel free to share your tributes and stories below.
Share your stories, your tributes, or the names of those you remember. This is a moderated forum and comments will be posted, pending approval, within 24 hours.

More than a 3 day weekend
I can't imagine being a mother to a soldier at war. Pride and fear, suffering and loss of a child - a spouse - a parent or a friend. I count my blessings every day and my heart goes out to all of those who have made that ultimate sacrifice, and that includes the loved ones who are left behind. I salute you today and each day of freedom that you have made possible. God Bless You. A very fortunate Air Force (retired) Wife

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
To all of those who are serving in our Armed Services, thank you. I am sitting at my computer on this muggy, sticky Memorial day with goosebumps on my arms. I just listened to the 99.5 Memorial Day tribute and the words "thank you" are just not enough to say to these young men and women who gave their lives so the rest of us can be free. When I go to sleep tonight, I will say a special prayer for each and every one of you to stay safe. Thank you again. Kim in Richmond

My Son
Two years ago for Memorial weekend I spent the weekend planting trees, thinking how much my son was going to love the new place. My newphew and his wife were there with their 3 kids. We had a great time Alex was in Iraq so there was a lot of talk about him we even opened an extra beer and had it on the table for him. On tuesday following this wonderful weekend 2 officers walked up to my door in dress blues at 7:30 in the morning. They asked me if I was mother to Alexander Kolasa, I wanted to tell them no, because I didn't want to hear what they had to say.
Every Memorial Weekend wil hold that memory for the rest of my life.

My Son
To the mom that lost her son on Memorial Day 2006. My heart goes out to you and all the other Moms, Dads, Brothers, Sisters (the list goes on). I can not even imagine how you felt that day. I was told by my son is scheduled to be deployed in 2009. All I can think about is all the americans that have given their lives for us to have the freedom to be the great country that we are. "GOD BLESS ALL THAT HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES, AND THOSE THAT ARE AND WILL BE FIGHTING TO DEFEND THEIR COUNTRY." God Bless You All... Another Army Mom
