Devin Scillian

One wonders what Devin Scillian puts on an application that asks for his occupation. Journalist, best-selling author, songwriter, musician --- they all fit.

As a journalist, Devin Scillian brings national and international reporting experience to his position as anchor of Detroit's top-rated newscast, Local First News at 11 PM and Local First News at 5 & 6 on WDIV-TV. His Sunday morning news program Flashpoint has become required viewing for those in the know. And he's been honored for his work both at home and abroad.

Outside of the newsroom, Devin's passions have taken him into other creative worlds. A popular author of children's books, he has inspired children across the nation with his compelling and patriotic stories. Read more about this best-selling author in Books. Devin is also an accomplished country artist, with two albums and a Detroit Music Award under his belt. Learn more and sample his tunes in Music.

After graduating from the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas in 1985, Devin began his career at WIBW-TV in Topeka. His career took him to WAND in Decatur, Illinois, KLTV in Tyler, Texas, and KFOR in Oklahoma City before he arrived in Detroit. He joined WDIV in August 1995 as a reporter and moved into the anchor position in 1996.

Devin's news assignments have taken him from Sydney, Australia to St. Peter's Square at the Vatican; from the Red Sea to Moscow; from Jerusalem to Siberia. His interview subjects range from Willie Nelson to President Bush. He's covered terrorism at the World Trade Center, the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, the U.S. invasion of Haiti, the birth of DaimlerChrysler, the disaster of Hurricane Andrew, the arms embargo against Iraq, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Olympic Games have taken Devin to Sydney, Salt Lake City, and Athens where he covered the Summer Games for NBC. Most recently, he traveled to China to explain the crisis in American manufacturing. His documentary "The China Syndrome: Where Did All the Jobs Go?" won an Edward R. Murrow Award, one of the highest honors in television news.

Devin gained wide recognition for his coverage of the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City. As anchor for KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City, his marathon reporting at the anchor desk was carried all over the country by NBC and all over the world by CNN. The saddest and most challenging day of his career won him the Emmy Award for "Best Anchor," one of ten Devin has received. The bombing coverage he led at KFOR earned the station the distinguished Peabody Award.

Devin, his wife Corey, and their four children make their home in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.
